Radiation Damage in Scintillating Crystals1)
نویسنده
چکیده
Crystal Calorimetry in future high energy physics experiments faces a new challenge to maintain its precision in a hostile radiation environment. This paper discusses the effects of radiation damage in scintillating crystals, and concludes that the predominant radiation damage effect in crystal scintillators is the radiation induced absorption, or color center formation, not the loss of scintillation light yield. The importance of maintaining crystal’s light response uniformity and the feasibility to build a precision crystal calorimeter under radiation are elaborated. The mechanism of radiation damage in scintillating crystals is also discussed. While the damage in alkali halides is found to be caused by the oxygen/hydroxyl contamination, it is the structure defects, such as oxygen vacancies, cause damage in oxides. Material analysis methods used to reach these conclusions are presented in details. 1) Invited talks presented in “International Conference on Inorganic Scintillators and Their Applications”, Shanghai, Sept. 1997 and “VII International Conference on Calorimetry in High Energy Physics”, Tucson, Nov. 1997.

متن کاملA Fiber Detector Radiation Hardness Test
An intense 146 MeV/c pion beam was stopped inside a scintillating fiber detector made out of 12 planes with 16 pixels each, where every pixel consists out of 8 × 8 scintillating fibers of 500 μm diameter dense packed. The detector was irradiated for 52 hours to more than 1 Mrad at its center. Before and directly after the irradiation the detector has been exposed to a particle beam to compare t...
متن کاملRadiation hardness and mechanical durability of Kuraray optical fibers
The radiation hardness of Kuraray 3HF scintillating and clear optical fibers has been investigated using 60Co c-rays in the dose range 0.4—500krad. Significant initial degradation in the attenuation length was observed both for 3HF and clear fibers at a dose as small as 10 krad. The radiation hardness of both the scintillating and clear fibers is identical if it is expressed in terms of the rat...
متن کاملTarget Design and R&D of J-PARC E06 TREK experiment
TREK is an experiment to search for violation of time reversal invariance (T-violation) in the kaon decay of K π0μ ν planned at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The active target is one of the primal detector elements of the TREK detector system. Kaons come from the beam line, stop and decay in the target. The active target consists of a bundle of scintillating fiber and ...
